A plume of black smoke rises as fire consumes a semi-truck and four other vehicles on Thursday, Aug. 26, 2021 on Interstate 10 at State Highway 123 Bypass. The chain reaction wreck resulted three deaths and left several injured, including a Seguin police officer.
Publisher Elizabeth Engelhardt describes how the shot came to be:
We had a horrible wreck happen on I-10 just behind our office building. We felt the walls shake and heard the boom from the 18 wheelers exploding. Managing Editor Felicia Frazar ran out the door so fast I had to have (New Braunfels Editor) Chris Lykins call and make sure she was ok.
Felicia’s close relationship with local police and fire departments got her a ride in a cruiser up on the interstate to cover the wreck. In the end, we had three major news stations contact us for permission to use our video with attribution, and we reached more than 159,000 people with our post. You better believe we are using that data. Don’t tell us that nobody reads the newspaper anymore!
